Progress

Today I worked on gather my thoughts regarding the quarter long project and then wrote the proposal. I also took the time to enter three pieces into the Manastash call for submissions. This weekend I plan to go out and shoot more, possibly Bremerton, Port Orchard, Gig Harbor area.

Circular?

Thinking it could be fun to create a series of photographs that are cropped as circles. If I did something like this I would probably focus on texture and color, similar to the second to last image.

Today's Shots

I went out and took some photographs around town. My only goal was to find things that interest me visually. I tend to find myself enthralled by alleyways and all the random nastiness they seem to offer. Anyway, here are the edited photographs, please let me know what you think. I realize some of these images are kind of crap in terms of blur and sharpness, if I end up using some I would likely reshoot them.

Still looking for inspiration

While browsing goodwill I found several interesting gadgets, I thought maybe they could make lovely props. One of the objects was a vintage iron, it appeared well used and featured a fabric cord. The other object was a good ol' crock pot that must have been straight out of the 70's. After discovering these beauties, I began wondering if I could make a series featuring these items. I just recently visited Relics on main street, saw a lot of other fantastic treasures perfect for photographing but I couldn't really think up any real good ideas to use them. Then I ran across Robert Moran's series titled 'Relics,' which is appears to be a pretty good way to commemorate these long forgotten everyday objects.

Trying to find inspiration

Snow falling from the trees and lit by the sun.
Lauren Grabelle, Snow Falling, Woods Bay, MT

When looking into the websites provided, I found several photographers. One of which is Lauren Grabelle, her photograph Snow Falling is stunning. It really captures that rather ephemeral moment when snow begins to fall through the forest. Then I looked into more of her photography and particularly the series 'Butte, America' where I found two lovely photographs which feature views looking down hallways. These two images remind of both The Shinning and the comparative aspect seen in the Becher's photographs.

1-The Further Shore, 201311-Ferry Window (Williamsburg Bridge), 2014
15-Ferry Window (Land), 2013

I found Susannah Ray's series titled 'A Further Shore.' I was mostly inspired by the photographs of landscapes included in the series. These images are simply beautiful, especially the way that the landscapes appear to be semi-abstracted.

Then I stumbled upon an article written about Alyssa Miserendino's work titled 'Our World Inside Out.' I think this series of work is quite amazing, the way that the photographer was able to create a narrative with the images as a whole. I feel like if the images were viewed separately, it wouldn't communicate the idea that as a society we have detached ourselves from nature and how this level of detachment differs throughout the world. I think that Miserendino really successfully made each image of the windows interesting in a unique way that it does not become too repetitious.

Brainstorming

Today while researching, I stumbled upon Abram Santa Cruz and his backlit oil paintings on glass. More specifically the piece titled Black Stream. This piece got me thinking that it could be really interesting to print onto some kind of transparent or even semi transparent film and then mount on a light box? Use photographs of texture, focusing more on formal principles to create something more abstract??
